Why do wedding cakes cost more?
You're not just paying for a beautiful cake – you're paying for something far more important.
The backstory
The question that changed the price.
Long before I was a wedding vendor, I went to buy a cake for my aunty’s birthday. Before we even got into flavours or design, the cake maker asked me: “Is this for a wedding?”
I remember thinking, what difference should that make? It’s the same cake. Same icing. Same decoration. The same hours of work. The same delivery to the same kind of venue. Why should the word “wedding” change the price?
I was told, plainly, that it does – and for no other reason than that. The cake maker didn’t explain any further. At the time, I let it go, because it wasn’t for a wedding. So there.
Now that I am a wedding vendor, I understand exactly why.
The real answer
What you’re really paying for.
There’s one fundamental reason wedding cakes – and every other wedding vendor – cost more: you’re paying them to turn up.
Not just turn up eventually. Turn up on the right day, at the right time, at the right place, with everything needed to keep that cake looking and tasting its best until it’s cut and served. Only after all of that does it matter how the cake looks, how it tastes, or what it cost. Because a beautiful, delicious, perfectly priced cake means nothing to a bride and groom if it isn’t where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.
That’s it. That’s the whole premium.
Not Just Cake
It's the same
for every vendor.
Every wedding vendor you book – photographer, florist, celebrant, caterer – you’re paying them to show up as agreed, on a day that cannot be rescheduled.
A family member once told me they’d booked their wedding photographer for a bargain: a third of their already modest budget, which was itself a fraction of the going rate. They weren’t fussed about fancy photos. They just wanted something basic, and the price reflected that.
I told them I was nervous for them – not because the photos might not be great, but because good or bad photos don’t matter at all if the photographer never turns up.
Two days before the wedding, I got a message: “Can you believe it?” – followed by a screenshot. The photographer was cancelling. They couldn’t make it. They’d send the deposit back.

The couple were devastated. Sadly, I could believe it and wasn't surprised in the slightest. If a vendor prices themselves that low, walking away costs them nothing. There’s no significant sale on the line, no reputation at stake, nothing pulling them back to keep the commitment. And “at least they refunded the deposit” is no comfort to a couple standing at their own wedding with no one there to capture it.
The risk
The real cost of cheap.
This is what a wedding price tag is really protecting you from. It’s not vanity or upselling – it’s the cost of certainty. When you pay a fair, professional rate, you’re paying for someone who has enough invested in your day that walking away isn’t an option. Someone whose business depends on being there, not just being booked.
But here’s the important caveat: price alone isn’t proof of reliability. A high price doesn’t guarantee someone will turn up, and a lower price doesn’t automatically mean they won’t. What actually protects you is what’s behind the price – the systems, contracts, and track record that make walking away costly for the vendor, not just for you.
So before you book – cheap, expensive, or somewhere in between – here’s what’s actually worth checking.
Your Checklist
Questions to ask before you book any
wedding vendor.
01 Is there a written contract?
02 What’s their cancellation and no-show policy?
03 Do they carry business insurance?
04 How long have they been doing this, and can you see recent work?
05 What happens if they’re sick or double-booked?
06 Why is the price what it is?
07 Does the deposit reflect real commitment – on both sides?
Takeaway
The bottom line
A cake, a photo, a bouquet – none of it matters if the person behind it doesn’t turn up. Price can be part of that story, but it’s not the whole story. The real signal is whether a vendor has built a business where showing up is the only option – and a contract, insurance, and a plan for the unexpected will tell you that far more reliably than the number on the quote.
